Why this guide: about 18,100 people a month search Google for “things to do in cancun” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Do firstChichén Itzá at opening with a cenote on the way back, Isla Mujeres by ferry, and a cenote swim near Tulum
- FreeThe Hotel Zone's public beaches (Playa Delfines, Playa Chac Mool), the El Rey ruins (tiny fee), the downtown Parque de las Palapas, Isla Mujeres' Playa Norte
- SkipThe Coco Bongo-style clubs unless that is the trip, and Tulum's beach clubs' minimum spends
The Hotel Zone and downtown
The Hotel Zone is a 22-km sandbar of resorts; Playa Delfines (the 'Cancun' sign) and Playa Chac Mool are the public beaches with the clearest water. The El Rey ruins and the Maya Museum are the history stops on the strip; Nichupté lagoon has the sunset boat trips and the jet-ski jungle tours. Downtown (El Centro): the Parque de las Palapas for street food, Mercado 28 for crafts, and the restaurants on Avenida Yaxchilán where locals eat.
Islands and the reef
Isla Mujeres by ferry from Puerto Juárez (20 minutes): Playa Norte's shallow turquoise, a golf cart around the island, Punta Sur's cliffs, the MUSA underwater sculpture museum by snorkel or dive. Cozumel (via Playa del Carmen ferry) for the Mesoamerican Reef's drift dives at Palancar and Columbia. Holbox (3 hours) for whale sharks June–September and the flamingos; Contoy for the bird sanctuary.
Ruins
Chichén Itzá (2.5 hours; leave at 6 a.m. to arrive at opening and beat the coaches and the heat; Ik Kil or Suytun cenote on the way back). Tulum's clifftop ruins over the sea (90 minutes; go at 8 a.m.). Cobá's climbable pyramid in the jungle, by bike between the sites. Ek Balam's carved façade is the quiet alternative to Chichén, with the Xcanché cenote.
Cenotes and parks
The Riviera Maya's cenotes: Dos Ojos and the Pit for snorkelling and cave diving, Gran Cenote near Tulum, Cenote Azul near Playa del Carmen, Casa Cenote's mangroves; the Ruta de los Cenotes inland from Puerto Morelos for the less-visited ones. Xcaret (eco-park, evening show), Xel-Há (snorkel lagoon) and Xplor (zip-lines and underground rivers) are the all-day ticketed parks; Puerto Morelos' reef is the low-key snorkel.
Eat, and get there
Cochinita pibil, ceviche and fish tacos at La Playita or downtown, marquesitas from the park carts, a Yucatecan dinner, and the resort buffets you paid for. Cancun International (CUN) is 20–30 minutes from the Hotel Zone, 45–60 to Playa del Carmen, 90 to Tulum; the engine's Cancun page carries the resorts and the Vacation Packages bundle flights — a pre-booked chauffeur from CUN skips the timeshare gauntlet in arrivals. Three things to get right
- Chichén Itzá at opening — leave the hotel at 6 a.m.
- Isla Mujeres on a weekday; Playa Norte fills by noon at weekends.
- Book a driver for the day rather than a 40-seat coach tour.
