Why this guide: about 12,100 people a month search Google for “best time to visit cancun” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Best overallDecember–April, with late January–February and late April the sweet spots
- CheapestSeptember–October (also the riskiest for storms); May–early June is the value compromise
- AvoidMid-March for spring break, Christmas–New Year for prices, September–October for hurricanes and peak sargassum
Dry season (December–April): the water is at its bluest
Highs of 28–30°C, low humidity, the sea calm and clear on the Hotel Zone's north-facing beaches and at Isla Mujeres. This is when the all-inclusives fill; Christmas to New Year and Easter week are the two most expensive fortnights of the year. Mid-March brings US college spring break to the Hotel Zone's party hotels — pick an adults-only resort or the Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen, Tulum) if that is not your scene.
Sargassum season (May–September)
The brown seaweed that drifts in from the Atlantic has become the biggest variable in a Cancún holiday. It is worst from May to August on east-facing beaches; the north-facing beaches at the top of the Hotel Zone (Playa Langosta to Playa Caracol) and Isla Mujeres' Playa Norte are sheltered and usually clear. Resorts publish daily beach photos — check before you book, and choose one with a large pool complex as insurance.
Hurricane season (June–November)
The risk is real from late August to October; September and October carry the most named storms. Prices are at their lowest, resorts run 40–50% below winter rates, and most weeks are simply hot and humid with afternoon showers — but buy travel insurance with weather cover and book a resort with a flexible policy.
Water, heat and crowds by month
Sea temperature ranges from 26°C in February to 30°C in August. May and June are hot (33°C) but quieter and cheaper than winter, with early-season sargassum a coin toss. November is an underrated window: the storms are usually done, the seaweed has gone, and rates have not yet climbed for Christmas.
Booking it
Cancún International (CUN) is 20–30 minutes from the Hotel Zone and 45–75 minutes from the Riviera Maya. The engine's Cancún page carries the resorts and the flight search; the Resort Collection has whole-week stays. A pre-booked chauffeur from CUN skips the notorious arrivals-hall taxi hustle.
Three things to get right
- North-facing Hotel Zone beaches and Isla Mujeres for the clearest water in seaweed season.
- November is the value month: storms done, seaweed gone, prices still low.
- Adults-only or Riviera Maya if you are travelling in March.
