Why this guide: about 110,000 people a month search Google for “things to do in chicago” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Do firstChicago Architecture Center river cruise, then Millennium Park and the Art Institute
- FreeThe Bean, the Lakefront Trail, Lincoln Park Zoo, Garfield Park Conservatory
- SkipNavy Pier beyond the Ferris wheel and the boat departures
The Loop and Millennium Park
Start with the Chicago Architecture Center's river cruise (90 minutes, from the Riverwalk at Michigan Avenue) — the docents explain why the city looks the way it does, from the Wrigley Building to Jeanne Gang's Aqua and St. Regis towers. Then Millennium Park: Cloud Gate (the Bean), Crown Fountain, the Pritzker Pavilion's free summer concerts, and the Art Institute next door, whose Impressionist rooms and Nighthawks alone justify the ticket.
Skydeck, 360 Chicago or neither
Willis Tower's Skydeck ledge and 360 Chicago's Tilt at the former Hancock are the paid views; the free alternative is a drink at the Signature Lounge on the 96th floor of 875 North Michigan, or the rooftop at Cindy's above the Chicago Athletic Association hotel overlooking the park.
The lake
The Lakefront Trail runs 18 miles; rent a Divvy bike and ride from Navy Pier north past Oak Street Beach to Lincoln Park Zoo (free) and the conservatory. In summer, North Avenue Beach and Montrose Beach are the swims; in winter, the frozen lake is its own spectacle from the Museum Campus (Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium).
Neighbourhoods
Wrigleyville for a Cubs game and the bars on Clark Street; Wicker Park and Bucktown for record shops, vintage and the 606 elevated trail; Logan Square for the restaurants along Milwaukee Avenue; Pilsen for murals, the National Museum of Mexican Art and taquerias on 18th Street; Hyde Park for the University of Chicago, the Robie House and the Museum of Science and Industry. Chinatown and Argyle Street (Vietnamese) are the food detours.
Eat, and get there
Deep dish at Pequod's or Lou Malnati's is the tourist rite; tavern-style thin crust (Vito & Nick's, Pat's) is what locals order. Italian beef at Al's or Johnnie's, a Chicago dog with no ketchup, and the Michelin end — Alinea, Oriole, Smyth — book weeks out. O'Hare (ORD) is 45–75 minutes from downtown depending on traffic and Midway (MDW) 30; the engine's Chicago page carries the hotels and a chauffeur is the sane way through the Kennedy Expressway.
Three things to get right
- Book the architecture cruise and Alinea before you fly.
- Divvy bike the lakefront rather than driving anywhere near it.
- Summer festivals (Lollapalooza early August, Blues Fest June) double hotel rates.
