Things to Do in Amsterdam: The Canals, the Museums, the Neighbourhoods and the Bike

Amsterdam is small, flat and made for a bicycle. Book the three museums before you fly, rent a bike on arrival, and let the canal ring and the neighbourhoods behind it do the rest.

Why this guide: about 18,100 people a month search Google for “things to do in amsterdam” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.

The short answer

  • Do firstThe Anne Frank House (booked six weeks ahead), the Rijksmuseum, and an evening canal cruise
  • FreeThe canal ring itself, Vondelpark, the Begijnhof, the ferry to Noord, the Albert Cuyp market, the Bloemenmarkt, the Rijksmuseum's garden
  • SkipThe Red Light District as an attraction and the Heineken Experience

The big three museums

The Rijksmuseum (Rembrandt's Night Watch, Vermeer, the Dutch Golden Age; allow three hours), the Van Gogh Museum (timed, book weeks ahead), and the Anne Frank House (tickets released six weeks ahead on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. CET, sell out within hours). The Stedelijk for modern art and the Moco for the Banksy-and-Kusama crowd share Museumplein; the Rembrandt House and Our Lord in the Attic are the small ones.

The canals

A canal cruise at dusk (the small open boats — Those Dam Boat Guys, Pure Boats — are better than the glass-roofed ones); walking the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht from the Jordaan to the Amstel; the Seven Bridges view at Reguliersgracht; the Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) lit at night. The Grachtenmuseum explains the canal houses; the Bloemenmarkt's floating flower stalls are on the Singel.

Neighbourhoods

The Jordaan's lanes, the Noordermarkt's Saturday farmers' market and the Westerkerk tower; the Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) for boutiques and cafés; De Pijp for the Albert Cuyp market and the restaurants around Sarphatipark; Oud-West's Foodhallen; the Plantage for Artis zoo and the Hortus Botanicus; Amsterdam Noord by free ferry behind Centraal — the A'DAM Lookout's swing, the Eye Filmmuseum, NDSM's street art and the Pllek beach bar.

Bikes, parks and day trips

Rent a bike (MacBike, Black Bikes) and ride Vondelpark, the Amstel river south to Ouderkerk, or the Amsterdamse Bos. Day trips: Haarlem (15 minutes; the Grote Markt, the Frans Hals Museum), Zaanse Schans windmills (20 minutes), Keukenhof's tulips (mid-March to mid-May, book), Utrecht's canals, or the beach at Zandvoort in summer. Kinderdijk's nineteen mills are a longer trip.

Eat, and get there

Stroopwafels warm from the Albert Cuyp stall, herring from a cart, bitterballen with a beer in a brown café, an Indonesian rijsttafel (Blauw, Tempo Doeloe), Surinamese roti in De Pijp, apple pie at Winkel 43, and one of the new Dutch tasting menus. Schiphol (AMS) is 20–30 minutes from the centre; the engine's Amsterdam page carries the hotels, and a chauffeur from AMS is the civilised arrival for a canal-house hotel with no car access. See our canal-ring guide and the best time to visit.

Three things to get right

  • Anne Frank tickets: Tuesday 10 a.m. CET, six weeks ahead, set an alarm.
  • Rent a bike, not a car — and stay out of the bike lanes on foot.
  • Ferry to Noord for the view and the NDSM wharf.

People also ask

How many days do you need in Amsterdam?

Three: the museums and Museumplein, the canal ring and the Jordaan, and De Pijp with Noord — plus a day for Haarlem, Zaanse Schans or Keukenhof.

How do you get Anne Frank House tickets?

Only online, released six weeks in advance every Tuesday at 10:00 CET; they sell out within hours, and there are no walk-up tickets.

Is Amsterdam walkable?

Very — the centre is compact and flat — but a bike is the local way and covers the outer neighbourhoods and parks in minutes.
