Why this guide: about 74,000 people a month search Google for “things to do in miami” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Do firstA morning walk through the Art Deco District, then Wynwood Walls and a cortadito in Little Havana
- FreeSouth Beach itself, the Wynwood streets, Bayfront Park, the Venetian Pool exterior
- SkipBayside Marketplace and the celebrity-home boat tours
South Beach and the Art Deco District
Ocean Drive between 5th and 15th Streets is the pastel Art Deco strip — best at 8 a.m. before the restaurants set up, or on the Miami Design Preservation League's walking tour from the Art Deco Welcome Center. Lummus Park and the beach behind it are free; the lifeguard towers are the photo. Lincoln Road is the pedestrian shopping mall; Española Way the Spanish-village restaurant lane.
Wynwood and the Design District
Wynwood Walls (ticketed) is the curated core of a neighbourhood where every wall is painted — the free streets around NW 2nd Avenue are as good. Breweries and cafés fill the warehouses. The Design District to the north is the luxury-flagship and public-art quarter (Buckminster Fuller dome, the Institute of Contemporary Art, free).
Little Havana and the mainland
Calle Ocho (SW 8th Street): Domino Park, cigar rollers, Ball & Chain for live music, and Versailles for the cortadito and the politics. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Coconut Grove is the Gilded Age villa on the bay; the Pérez Art Museum and the Frost Science museum share a waterfront campus downtown. Key Biscayne's Bill Baggs State Park has the lighthouse and the calmest beach.
Everglades and the Keys
Everglades National Park's Shark Valley (90 minutes west) has a 15-mile tram loop and alligators on the path; airboat rides are just outside the park boundary on the Tamiami Trail. Key Largo is 90 minutes south for snorkelling at John Pennekamp; Key West is 3.5–4 hours each way — a night, not a day trip.
Eat, and get there
Cuban sandwiches at Sanguich, stone crabs at Joe's (October–May), ceviche at CVI.CHE 105, the Design District's Michelin rooms, and Little Haiti's griot. Miami International (MIA) is 20–30 minutes from South Beach and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) 45; the engine's Miami page carries the beach hotels and the Resort Collection has the Florida Keys — a pre-booked chauffeur is the calm arrival on the MacArthur Causeway.
Three things to get right
- Art Deco at 8 a.m., Wynwood late afternoon, Little Havana at night.
- Stone crab season is mid-October to May.
- Art Basel (early December) and Ultra (late March) multiply hotel rates.
