The Hotel Zone
A 22-km sandbar between the Caribbean and the Nichupté lagoon. The northern hook (km 0–9) faces Isla Mujeres and has the calmest water — Hyatt Ziva on Punta Cancun's tip with three beaches, Hyatt Zilara next door for adults, Le Blanc at km 10 as the luxury benchmark with butlers and the spa. South of km 10 the beach faces the open Caribbean — wider, wavier, more drop-off: Secrets The Vine, Iberostar Selection Cancun (with a golf course), the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach (not all-inclusive) at the hook. Kempinski (the former Ritz-Carlton) at km 14 is the quietest luxury address.
Playa Mujeres and Isla Mujeres
North of the airport and the Hotel Zone, Playa Mujeres is a gated strip on a lagoon-calm beach with no nightlife and no sargassum to speak of: Excellence Playa Mujeres (adults, the category's most consistent), Finest Playa Mujeres (families with an adults wing), Dreams and Secrets Playa Mujeres, Atelier and Estudio Playa Mujeres. Secrets Impression Isla Mujeres sits across the water on the island, reached by the resort's ferry — the most private of the group.
The Riviera Maya
From Puerto Morelos south past Playa del Carmen to Tulum: Grand Velas Riviera Maya (the luxury all-inclusive with the best food in the region), Unico 20°87° (design, adults), Hard Rock Riviera Maya (families and teens), the Iberostar Playa Paraíso complex, Secrets Maroma (Maroma Beach is the coast's best), Moon Palace's sister The Grand at Moon Palace, Hotel Xcaret Mexico and Xcaret Arte (park access included), and Tulum's boutique end which is mostly not all-inclusive. Sargassum hits this coast harder in summer than the Hotel Zone's north hook.

Booking it
Cancun International (CUN) is 20–30 minutes from the Hotel Zone and Playa Mujeres, 45–60 to Playa del Carmen, 90 to Tulum.
