Best Time to Visit Greece: Island Season, Meltemi Winds and When Athens Is Actually Pleasant

The Greek islands have a short, intense season: ferries and hotels wake up at Easter, peak in August and go quiet by late October. The edges of that season are where the good trips are.

Why this guide: about 9,900 people a month search Google for “best time to visit greece” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.

The short answer

  • Best overallLate May–June and September–early October
  • CheapestNovember–March on the mainland; April and late October on the islands that stay open
  • AvoidLate July–August for prices, crowds and the meltemi; January–February for the islands, when most hotels are shut

Spring (April–June)

Athens is at its best in April and May — 20–26°C, wildflowers on the Acropolis slopes, and the marble not yet too hot to touch. The islands open around Orthodox Easter (a moving date, usually April) and are quiet until June; the sea is cool in May (18–20°C) and comfortable by mid-June. Late May to June is the first ideal window: everything open, prices below peak, beaches half empty.

Summer (July–August)

Athens exceeds 35°C and the meltemi, the strong northerly wind, blows through the Cyclades from mid-July to late August — Mykonos and Naxos can be gusty for days and some ferry crossings are cancelled. Santorini hits peak occupancy; caldera-view hotels charge their annual highs. If July–August is your only option, go to the Ionian islands (Corfu, Kefalonia) or Crete's south coast, which are less affected by the wind.

Autumn (September–October)

September is the best month in the Greek calendar: the sea is at its warmest (25–26°C), the wind has dropped, the crowds have thinned and rates ease week by week. The season winds down through October — by the last week many island hotels and restaurants close and ferry schedules shrink, though Crete and Rhodes stay lively into November.

Winter (November–March)

The islands largely shut; Athens, Thessaloniki and the Peloponnese are the winter destinations, with cheap hotels, empty archaeological sites and mild days of 12–16°C. Rain is concentrated in December and January. Ski resorts near Athens (Parnassos) and in the north run January–March.

Booking from the engine

The Santorini and Rhodes destination pages carry hotels and the island airports; Athens (ATH) is the hub for ferries from Piraeus and Rafina. Book September on Santorini by spring — the good caldera hotels sell out — and pre-book a transfer from Santorini airport, which has no meaningful taxi rank.

Three things to get right

  • September: warmest sea, no wind, prices falling.
  • Ionian islands or Crete if you must go in August.
  • Santorini caldera hotels for September sell out by April.
