Things to Do in Las Vegas: The Strip, the Sphere, Downtown and the Desert Around It

Vegas is a four-mile stage set with a desert around it that most visitors never touch. Do the Strip properly, then get out to Red Rock before dawn and you'll understand why locals stay.

Why this guide: about 49,500 people a month search Google for “things to do in las vegas” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.

The short answer

  • Do firstA Sphere show, the Bellagio fountains and conservatory, and Red Rock Canyon at sunrise
  • FreeThe fountains, the conservatory, the Mirage-to-Venetian walk, Fremont Street's canopy, the Arts District
  • SkipPaying for the Strip's 'free' shows' VIP viewing and the taxi from the airport

The Strip

Walk it once, south to north, at night: the Bellagio fountains (every 15–30 minutes), the conservatory's seasonal gardens, the Venetian's canals, the Wynn's lake of dreams. The High Roller at the LINQ and the Eiffel Tower at Paris are the paid views; the Chandelier bar at the Cosmopolitan and the SkyBar at the Waldorf are the free ones with a drink. Resorts World and Fontainebleau are the north end's new giants.

Shows

The Sphere is the current must — the exterior is a landmark, the interior a 16K wraparound theatre (The Sphere Experience film plus resident concerts). Cirque du Soleil's O (Bellagio) and Mystère (Treasure Island) hold up; the residency calendar — Dolby Live, the Colosseum, Resorts World Theatre — drives most weekend trips. Book on the box office's own site, not the resale layer.

Downtown and the Arts District

Fremont Street's Viva Vision canopy and zipline, the Golden Nugget's shark-tank pool, the Mob Museum and the Neon Museum's boneyard of rescued signs (book the night tour). The Arts District on Main Street has the breweries, vintage shops and the restaurants locals recommend — Esther's Kitchen, Main Street Provisions.

The desert

Red Rock Canyon's 13-mile scenic loop (timed entry, 20 minutes west) at sunrise; Valley of Fire's red sandstone an hour north-east; Hoover Dam 45 minutes south-east; the Grand Canyon West Skywalk 2.5 hours, or the South Rim proper 4.5 — a helicopter tour from the Strip does the West Rim in a morning. Mount Charleston has snow in winter, 45 minutes from the Strip.

Booking it

Harry Reid International (LAS) is 10–15 minutes from the south Strip. Resort fees (US$35–55 a night) and parking fees are the catch — see our resort-fee guide — and Sunday–Thursday rates are a fraction of Friday–Saturday. The engine's Las Vegas page carries the Strip hotels; a chauffeur from LAS beats the taxi queue at Terminal 1.

Three things to get right

  • Book the Sphere and any residency the day tickets release.
  • Red Rock at sunrise, before the heat and the timed-entry window.
  • Midweek stays cost half of weekend ones; factor resort fees in.

A resort fee is a mandatory daily charge added at check-out that was not in the headline rate. It funds nothing you asked for, and since 2025 US hotels must show it up front — but they still charge it.
