Why this guide: about 22,200 people a month search Google for “things to do in barcelona” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Do firstThe Sagrada Família with a tower ticket, the Gothic Quarter at 8 a.m., and Park Güell's monumental zone
- FreeThe Gothic Quarter and the Born, Barceloneta beach, Montjuïc's gardens and the Magic Fountain show, the Bunkers del Carmel view, Park Güell's free zone
- SkipLa Rambla's restaurants and paying for a paella on the beachfront
Gaudí
The Sagrada Família (timed ticket, book weeks ahead; the tower climb is the upgrade; the interior light is best at 9 a.m. or 5 p.m.), Park Güell's monumental zone (timed), Casa Batlló and La Pedrera on Passeig de Gràcia (one of the two is enough for most), Palau Güell off La Rambla, and the Palau de la Música Catalana — not Gaudí, but the Modernisme's most exuberant interior.
Gothic Quarter, the Born and La Rambla
The Barri Gòtic at 8 a.m. before the shops open: the cathedral and its cloister geese, Plaça del Rei, the Roman walls and the Temple of Augustus's columns, Plaça Sant Felip Neri. The Born: Santa Maria del Mar, the Picasso Museum, El Born market's excavated streets, and the bars around Passeig del Born. La Boqueria market off La Rambla for breakfast, then leave La Rambla to the crowds.
The sea and the hills
Barceloneta's beach and the seafront walk to the W hotel and Port Olímpic; a bike along the promenade to the quieter Bogatell and Mar Bella. Montjuïc: the castle by cable car, the Miró Foundation, the MNAC's Romanesque frescoes, the Olympic stadium, and the Magic Fountain's evening show (check the schedule). Tibidabo's vintage amusement park and church for the city view; the Bunkers del Carmel for the free sunset.
Neighbourhoods and day trips
Gràcia's squares and bars above Passeig de Gràcia; Poblenou's converted factories and the Rambla del Poblenou; El Raval's MACBA and the Sant Antoni market; Sarrià for the village feel. Camp Nou (reopening in stages) for FC Barcelona. Montserrat's monastery and mountain by rack railway (an hour); Sitges for the beach town; Girona and the Dalí museum in Figueres for a longer day.
Eat, and get there
Tapas at Quimet & Quimet and Bar del Pla, vermouth in Gràcia, pintxos on Carrer de Blai, paella in Barceloneta at a place with a queue of locals (Can Solé), a Catalan tasting menu, and xuixos for breakfast. El Prat (BCN) is 25–35 minutes from the centre; the engine's Barcelona page carries the hotels, and a chauffeur from BCN is the sane arrival for the old city's pedestrian lanes. See our Sagrada Família guide.
Three things to get right
- Sagrada Família tickets first; Park Güell second; the rest can wait.
- Gothic Quarter before 9 a.m., the beach late afternoon, Montjuïc at sunset.
- Pickpockets work La Rambla and the metro — front pockets only.
