Best Time to Visit Morocco: Spring and Autumn for the Cities, Winter for the Desert, and Ramadan

Morocco has a coast that is always mild, cities that bake in summer, mountains with snow and a desert that freezes at night in January. Spring and autumn are when they all line up.

Why this guide: about 3,600 people a month search Google for “best time to visit morocco” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.

The short answer

  • Best overallMarch–May and late September–November
  • CheapestJanuary–February (excluding New Year) and July–August inland
  • AvoidJuly–August in Marrakech and Fes (38–45°C); Christmas–New Year for riad prices; Ramadan if daytime dining outside hotels matters to you

Spring (March–May)

Marrakech at 22–28°C, the Atlas still snow-capped above orchards in blossom, and the desert warm by day and cool at night. April is the month for the classic loop — Marrakech, the High Atlas, the Dades and Todra gorges, the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, Fes. Easter and the late-spring public holidays in Europe fill the riads; book by January.

Summer (June–August)

Inland cities are brutal — Marrakech regularly passes 40°C in July — and the Sahara is inadvisable. The coast is the summer answer: Essaouira stays at 22–25°C with a constant (sometimes fierce) wind, and the Atlantic beaches from Agadir to Taghazout are pleasant. Riad prices in Marrakech drop in July–August for the obvious reason; the pool-and-siesta approach works if you accept early mornings and late evenings.

Autumn (September–November)

The heat breaks by late September; October is the second ideal month with 25–28°C in Marrakech, warm desert nights, and the date harvest in the oases. November cools to 20°C and is a good, quieter month before the Christmas premium.

Winter (December–February)

Marrakech is mild by day (18°C) and cold at night (5°C) — riads are stone and many lack heating, so choose one with fireplaces or underfloor heating. The desert drops below freezing after dark, and the Atlas passes can close with snow; Oukaïmeden ski station operates January–March in a good year. It is the cheapest season outside the Christmas–New Year fortnight, and the winter light is beautiful.

Ramadan and booking

Ramadan shifts earlier each year (mid-February in 2027): sites and hotels operate normally, restaurants outside hotels are closed by day, and the evenings after iftar are festive. Marrakech Menara (RAK) is 15–20 minutes from the medina; the engine's Marrakesh and Chefchaouen pages carry hotels, and a chauffeur to the medina gate — cars cannot enter — is the standard arrival. See our Jemaa el-Fnaa guide.

Three things to get right

  • April and October for the full Marrakech–Atlas–Sahara loop.
  • Essaouira or the coast if you must come in July–August.
  • Winter riads: check for heating before you book.
