Best Time to Visit Santorini: May, June and September — and the Cruise-Ship Calendar

Santorini's caldera view is the same in May and in August. The difference is 3,000 cruise passengers in the Oia lanes, a doubled hotel rate and a wind that whips the terraces. Go in the shoulders.

Why this guide: about 1,900 people a month search Google for “best time to visit santorini” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.

The short answer

  • Best overallLate May–June and September–early October
  • CheapestApril and late October–early November (hotels that stay open discount deeply)
  • AvoidJuly–August for crowds, prices and the meltemi; December–March when most of the island closes

Spring (April–June)

The island reopens around Orthodox Easter; April is quiet, green and cool (18°C), with the sea too cold for most (16°C). May warms to 23°C, the caldera hotels are at 60–70% of peak rate, and the sunsets at Oia can be watched without a shoulder in your ear. June is warm (27°C), the sea swimmable (22°C), and still short of full August intensity — the best all-round month.

Summer (July–August)

Peak in every sense: 30°C+, the meltemi wind blowing hard on many afternoons, four or five cruise ships in the caldera on busy days delivering up to 10,000 day visitors to Fira and Oia, and cliff-side hotels at their annual maximum with three- or four-night minimums. If August is unavoidable, stay in Imerovigli or Pyrgos rather than Oia and see the villages before 10 a.m.

Autumn (September–October)

September is the local favourite: the sea is at its warmest (25°C), the wind has dropped, the grape harvest is in at the Assyrtiko wineries, and the crowds fall away week by week. October is still warm and swimmable in the first half, cheaper in the second; by late October restaurants and hotels begin to close and ferry frequencies drop.

Winter (November–March)

Most of Oia and much of Fira shuts; a few hotels and tavernas stay open for a quiet, cheap, often windy and rainy island of 12–15°C. It suits photographers and honeymooners who want the caldera to themselves, not beach-goers.

Booking from the engine

Santorini (JTR) has direct seasonal flights from most of Europe and year-round connections via Athens; ferries from Piraeus take 5–8 hours. The engine's Santorini destination page carries the hotels and the airport; pre-book the airport transfer — the taxi supply is tiny and the caldera hotels are reached on foot from a drop-off point.

Three things to get right

  • June or September for the caldera at its best.
  • Check the cruise-ship schedule and see Oia before 10 a.m.
  • Book September caldera rooms by April.
