Why this guide: about 9,900 people a month search Google for “best hotels in tokyo” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.

The sky-lobby luxury
Aman Tokyo on the 33rd–38th floors of the Otemachi Tower — the 30-metre lobby ceiling, the onsen-style baths, the most serene hotel in the city; the Peninsula on Hibiya Park with the Rolls-Royce fleet and the Imperial Palace views; Mandarin Oriental in Nihonbashi for the restaurants; the Park Hyatt in Shinjuku, reopened in 2025 after a full renovation, for the Lost in Translation bar and the Fuji views on clear mornings; the Ritz-Carlton in Roppongi's Midtown tower; Four Seasons Otemachi for the Palace view; Bulgari (2023) above Tokyo Station; Janu Tokyo (2024) in Azabudai Hills for the younger Aman; the Okura for the 1960s modernism rebuilt.
Ryokan-style and design
Hoshinoya Tokyo in Otemachi is the city's only true luxury ryokan — tatami floors, an onsen fed from 1,500 metres down, shoes off at the door, ¥100,000+ a night. Trunk Hotel in Shibuya and the Trunk Hotel Yoyogi Park (with the rooftop pool) for the design scene; Hotel Toranomon Hills (Hyatt's Unbound) for the Tadao Ando-adjacent minimalism; the Tokyo Station Hotel inside the 1914 red-brick station for the heritage; Andaz Toranomon for the 52nd-floor rooftop bar; Muji Hotel Ginza for the brand's aesthetic at ¥30,000; Hotel K5 in Nihonbashi's old bank; Sequence Miyashita Park on the Shibuya rooftop park.
Value and where to stay
Hotel Gracery Shinjuku for Godzilla and Kabukicho; Mimaru's apartment hotels for families (kitchens, bunk rooms); Dormy Inn's chain for the rooftop onsen and the free late-night ramen; Tokyu Stay for the washer-dryer in the room; the business hotels (APA, Sotetsu Fresa, Super Hotel) for ¥12,000–¥18,000 and a 12 m² room. Ginza and Marunouchi for the centre and the Yamanote access; Shinjuku for the scale and the west-side trains; Shibuya for the scene; Asakusa for the old city and the Skytree; Roppongi for the nightlife and the art. Avoid staying far east of Asakusa or west of Shinjuku on a first visit.
What to know
Japanese rooms are compact — 20–25 m² at a five-star's entry level, 12–15 m² in business hotels — and the luxury tier starts at ¥80,000. Cherry blossom (late March–early April), Golden Week (29 April–5 May), Obon (mid-August) and the autumn colour (November) are the peaks; June's rainy season and January–February are the value months. Most hotels take credit cards; many restaurants do not. See our best time to visit Japan guide.
Booking it
Haneda (HND) is 20–30 minutes from Ginza and Shinagawa, Narita (NRT) 60–90; the engine's Tokyo page carries the hotels above, and a pre-booked chauffeur from Narita is the difference between a serene arrival and the Narita Express with suitcases. See our things to do in Tokyo, Shibuya and Mount Fuji guides.
Three things to get right
- Aman, Peninsula or the reopened Park Hyatt for the view; Hoshinoya for the ryokan.
- Ginza/Marunouchi for a first visit; Shinjuku for the trains west.
- January–February and June are a third cheaper than blossom season.
