Why this guide: about 1,600 people a month search Google for “when is the best time to book a hotel” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Resorts and peak season3–6 months ahead — Christmas, spring break, summer beach and ski weeks sell out and rise; there is no last-minute discount
- City hotels, normal dates1–3 weeks ahead for the sweet spot; book flexible early and rebook if it falls
- Last-minute paysBusiness-city weekends (Sunday nights especially), off-season leisure cities, and the same-day apps when a city is under-sold
The two hotel markets
Resorts, ski hotels and all-inclusives in peak season behave like flights: limited inventory, rising prices, sell-outs; book three to six months ahead and earlier for Christmas–New Year, Easter, spring break and July–August. City hotels have more inventory and more volatile pricing: rates move with conventions, events and occupancy forecasts, fall when a date is under-sold, and spike when it fills. For cities, the data from Kayak, Google and NerdWallet's analyses cluster the cheapest bookings at one to four weeks out, with same-week deals in business cities at weekends.
Day of week and season
Business cities (New York, Chicago, London, Toronto, Tokyo, Frankfurt) are cheapest Friday–Sunday and especially Sunday night, when the executives have gone home; leisure cities and resorts (Las Vegas, Miami, Cancun, Rome) are cheapest Sunday–Thursday and dearest Friday–Saturday. Shoulder seasons cut 20–40% — see our best time to visit guides. Conventions matter more than seasons in some cities: CES in Las Vegas, Dreamforce in San Francisco, Fashion Week in Paris, TIFF in Toronto.
Book flexible, then rebook
The tactic that works: book a free-cancellation rate as soon as you know the dates (locks the room), set a price alert, and rebook if the rate drops — most flexible rates cancel free until 24–72 hours before arrival. Prepaid non-refundable rates are 10–15% cheaper but only worth it inside two weeks when you are certain. Watch the total: some 'deals' shift the price into resort fees or drop breakfast.
Where to book
Compare the hotel's own site, the engine, and the major OTAs — the engine's hotels page draws on the same wholesale and direct inventory and often shows packaged rates lower than standalone when paired with a flight. Loyalty programmes (Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, IHG, Accor) give member rates 5–10% below public, and status brings free breakfast, upgrades and waived resort fees. Same-day apps (HotelTonight) work in under-sold business cities on a Saturday night and rarely in resorts. Never book a peak-season resort last-minute expecting a discount — the last rooms are the most expensive.
Booking it
The engine's hotels search in 99 destinations shows flexible and non-refundable rates side by side with total pricing; Vacation Packages pair the room with a flight, often at a lower combined rate; the Resort Collection carries the all-inclusives that need the early booking. Add the chauffeur at the same time — airport transfers do not get cheaper closer to the date either. See our hotel-vs-Airbnb and resort-fee guides.
Three things to get right
- Resorts in peak season: 3–6 months out, no exceptions.
- Cities: book flexible early, alert, rebook when it drops.
- Business cities are cheapest on Sunday nights; leisure cities Sunday–Thursday.
