Niagara Falls from Toronto: The Canadian Side, the Boat, Journey Behind the Falls and the Evening Illumination

Three falls, 2,800 cubic metres of water a second, ninety minutes from downtown Toronto. Stand on the Canadian side, get on the boat, and stay for the lights.

Niagara is the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the small Bridal Veil, and the Canadian bank faces all three. The promenade from Table Rock — where you stand a few metres from the lip of the Horseshoe — along Niagara Parkway to the Rainbow Bridge is the free, essential walk. Everything else is a ticket, and the two that matter are the boat and the tunnels.

Niagara City Cruises (the Canadian boat, formerly Hornblower) sails from the foot of Clifton Hill into the basin of the Horseshoe, twenty minutes of spray in a red poncho that leaves nobody dry. Journey Behind the Falls takes you down by lift to tunnels cut through the rock behind the Horseshoe, with portals opening onto the falling water from behind, and an observation deck at the base. The Niagara Parks Adventure Pass bundles both with the White Water Walk and the Whirlpool Aero Car at a discount.

Stay until dark. The falls are lit in colour every evening from dusk, and fireworks are launched over them nightly in high season and on weekends and holidays through much of the year. The Skylon Tower's revolving restaurant and the Fallsview hotels' upper floors give the aerial version; the Clifton Hill strip below is the family-arcade version. Niagara-on-the-Lake, twenty minutes down the parkway, is the antidote: a Georgian town, the Shaw Festival theatres and the Ontario wine route — book a winery lunch.

From Toronto it is the QEW past Hamilton and St Catharines, about ninety minutes without traffic and well over two on summer Fridays. Day tours from downtown exist; a chauffeured day with a fixed price, a winery stop and a return after the fireworks is the version that makes the day feel like a holiday rather than a commute. It is also one of the most-booked routes on the BlaakLine booker on this page.
