Rio Carnival: Sambadrome Tickets, the Blocos and When to Book the Hotel

Two million people a day on the streets, and a purpose-built stadium where the samba schools parade until dawn. It is the biggest party on earth and it needs a plan.

Carnival in Rio has two halves and most visitors only know one. The Sambadrome — a 700-metre parade avenue designed by Oscar Niemeyer — hosts the Special Group samba schools on the Sunday and Monday nights, each school parading for around 70 minutes with up to 4,000 dancers and drummers and floats the size of houses. It starts at about 9 p.m. and finishes after sunrise. Tickets are sold by sector: the grandstands (arquibancadas) in sectors 9 and 11 are the classic value seats; the front boxes (frisas) put you at parade level; the camarotes are hospitality suites.

The other half is free. The blocos are street parties — some are neighbourhood affairs of a few hundred people, others like Cordão da Bola Preta draw a million to the centre. They begin weeks before Carnival proper and run through the whole five days, with brass bands, sound trucks and a costume rule that is 'anything'. Ipanema and Leblon have the most polished ones; Santa Teresa and the centre the most traditional.

The logistics are the hard part. Hotels in Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon sell out four to six months ahead and most impose minimum stays of four or five nights at Carnival rates. Book flights and rooms together, early, and treat the Sambadrome night as an all-nighter: eat before, bring a light layer for the 4 a.m. breeze, and pre-arrange your transport home — ride-hailing collapses at 6 a.m. outside the stadium, which is exactly where a booked chauffeur earns its fee.

If the parades are the priority, aim for the Champions' Parade the following Saturday: the six winning schools parade again, tickets are cheaper, and the crowds are calmer. Carnival week also happens to be Rio's hottest — 35°C days with high humidity — so the beach mornings are part of the schedule, not a distraction from it.

Three things to get right

  • Sectors 9 and 11 at the Sambadrome for atmosphere and value; frisas for the closest view.
  • Book Zona Sul hotels four to six months ahead and expect minimum stays.
  • Champions' Parade on the Saturday after is the cheaper, calmer way to see the winners.
