Why this guide: about 210 people a month search Google for “what is a black car service” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- What it isA pre-arranged, licensed for-hire sedan or SUV — typically black — with a professional chauffeur, at a fixed or zone rate; not hailable on the street
- vs limo and rideshareA limo (stretch) is an event vehicle; a black car is transport. Uber Black borrowed the name — the difference is pre-booking, a fixed price and an operator behind the driver
- CostNew York: JFK to Manhattan $150–$250, Manhattan point-to-point $60–$120; Toronto: Pearson to downtown from CA$120; LA: LAX to the Westside $110–$180; London: Heathrow to the centre £90–£150
Where the term comes from
New York's Taxi and Limousine Commission licenses several for-hire classes: yellow medallion cabs (street hail), green boro taxis, livery (community car services taking calls), and black car bases — originally the corporate-account services running black Lincoln Town Cars for Wall Street, law firms and the networks, dispatched by radio and billed by voucher. 'Black car' became the shorthand for a pre-arranged sedan with a professional driver, and the rideshare companies adopted it for their premium tier (Uber Black launched in 2010 as exactly this — a black car dispatched by app). The Town Car is gone; the Cadillac XTS/CT6, Lincoln Continental/MKT and Escalade, and the Mercedes S-Class replaced it.
What it means today
Anywhere in North America and increasingly in London (where 'executive car' or 'chauffeur car' is the term), a black car service is: a licensed for-hire operator; a late-model black sedan or SUV; a chauffeur in a suit; a booking made in advance by phone, app or portal; a price fixed by zone, flat fare or hour before the ride; flight tracking and meet-and-greet at airports; and a company that answers the phone. It is the everyday product of the chauffeur industry — the airport run, the dinner transfer, the client meeting — as distinct from the stretch limousine, which is for the wedding and the prom.
Black car vs limousine vs Uber Black
Limousine, strictly, is a stretch or a chauffeured luxury car; in industry use, 'limo service' covers everything from sedans to party buses. The black car is the sedan-and-SUV end. Uber Black and Lyft Lux use similar vehicles but on-demand, surge-priced, with the driver as an independent contractor and no guarantee of availability when your flight lands at 11 p.m.; a black car service is pre-arranged and guaranteed. Price at normal hours is similar; at peak, the black car's fixed rate is usually lower than the surged app; the black car adds the operator, the dispatcher and the accountability.

Toronto: Pearson to downtown from CA$120 (sedan) and CA$160 (SUV); Billy Bishop less; hourly from CA$95. Los Angeles: LAX to Santa Monica or Beverly Hills $110–$180; hourly $90–$150. Booking it
The chauffeur booker on this page is a black car booking in the classic sense: enter the airport or address, the flight, the vehicle class, and get the fixed price before you commit. BlaakLine's network, (877) 705-5757, coordinates licensed operators in New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Paris, Dubai and 90-odd more cities under one booking. See our luxury car service, airport limo and corporate car service guides.
Three things to get right
- Black car = pre-booked sedan/SUV at a fixed price; limo = the stretch for events.
- At peak hours the fixed rate usually beats the surged app for the same car.
- Ask for the vehicle class and the all-in price — that is the whole product.
