Best Time to Visit New York: Fall Is the Answer — and Here Is What Each Season Costs

New York works in every season, but it charges very differently for each. Autumn gives you the best weather; deep winter gives you the best rates; December gives you the lights and the bill.

Why this guide: about 8,100 people a month search Google for “best time to visit new york” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.

The short answer

  • Best overallMid-September–October and late April–May
  • CheapestJanuary–February (after New Year, before spring)
  • AvoidThanksgiving week to New Year's Day for hotel prices; late July–August for heat and humidity

Autumn (September–October)

Temperatures of 15–24°C, clear skies and Central Park turning colour from mid-October. It is also the busiest business-travel season: Fashion Week in early September, the UN General Assembly in the third week of September and the NYC Marathon on the first Sunday of November each push Midtown hotel rates up for a few days. Book around them and September–October is the finest time in the city.

Winter (November–February)

Thanksgiving week through New Year is peak: the Rockefeller Center tree, the department-store windows, the ball drop — and Manhattan hotels at their annual high, often double the January rate. The bargain arrives on 2 January: from then to late February you get the city at its quietest and cheapest, with Restaurant Week deals and Broadway Week two-for-ones. Bring a real coat; February averages −1°C to 5°C and the wind off the Hudson is serious.

Spring (March–May)

March is unpredictable; April and May are lovely — cherry blossom in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in late April, outdoor dining reopening, and rates still below the autumn peak. Memorial Day weekend at the end of May marks the start of summer pricing.

Summer (June–August)

Hot and humid (30–33°C) with the subway platforms hotter still, but the city is at its most alive: free Shakespeare in the Park, SummerStage concerts, rooftop bars, Governors Island. July 4th fireworks over the East River are worth planning around. August is quieter as New Yorkers leave — and hotel rates dip accordingly.

Booking from the engine

The New York destination page is built around JFK; Newark (EWR) is often closer to Midtown by car, LaGuardia (LGA) closest of all. A chauffeur from JFK to Midtown is 45–75 minutes depending on the hour; the AirTrain-and-subway route saves money and costs patience. Three things to get right

  • Second week of October: the colour, the weather, no marathon.
  • 2 January to late February is the only time Manhattan is cheap.
  • Check the UNGA and Fashion Week dates before booking September.
