Best Time to Visit Peru: Dry Season in the Andes, Wet Season Bargains and the Inca Trail Closure

Peru's highlands, coast and jungle each keep their own weather. For most visitors the Andes decide the trip — and the Andes are at their best from May to September.

Why this guide: about 6,600 people a month search Google for “best time to visit peru” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.

The short answer

  • Best overallMay–June and September (dry, clear, before or after the July–August peak)
  • CheapestNovember–March in Cusco and the Sacred Valley (wet season)
  • AvoidFebruary (Inca Trail closed, heaviest rain); late July–August for peak crowds at Machu Picchu; Lima in June–August for garúa fog

The Andes (Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca)

The dry season runs from May to September: sunny days of 18–20°C, cold nights near freezing, and the clearest views of the citadel from Kala Patthar-like vantage points at the Sun Gate. June has Inti Raymi (24 June) in Cusco and the highest visitor numbers with July and August. May and September offer the same weather with fewer people. The wet season (November–March) brings afternoon rain, green terraces, mist over Machu Picchu — and the Inca Trail closes for all of February.

The coast (Lima, Paracas, Nazca)

Lima's seasons are inverted: the summer (December–March) is warm and sunny at 25–28°C, while the winter (June–October) sits under the garúa, a grey coastal fog that rarely lifts. The coast gets almost no rain in either. Paracas and the Ballestas Islands are visitable year-round.

The Amazon (Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado, Manu)

The wet season (December–May) raises the rivers, floods the forest and puts you in a boat under the canopy; the dry season (June–November) exposes beaches and clay licks, with easier walking and more visible wildlife along the banks. Both are humid and warm at 30°C+.

Altitude and timing

Cusco sits at 3,400 metres; two nights there or, better, in the lower Sacred Valley (Urubamba, 2,870 m) before Machu Picchu is the sensible sequence in any season. Machu Picchu tickets are timed and circuit-based and sell out months ahead for June–August — see our Machu Picchu guide for the ticket types.

Booking from the engine

Lima (LIM) is the international gateway with a one-hour flight to Cusco (CUZ). Search flights on the engine; hotels for Cusco and the valley through the hotels tab; and pre-book the LIM airport transfer — Callao to Miraflores is 45–90 minutes in Lima traffic.

Three things to get right

  • May and September: dry-season weather, thinner crowds.
  • Inca Trail permits for June–August go on sale months ahead and sell out.
  • Two nights at altitude before Machu Picchu, in any month.

People also ask

What month is best for Machu Picchu?

May or September — dry, clear and quieter than June–August. June–August has the best odds of blue sky but the biggest crowds.

When is the Inca Trail closed?

For the whole of February every year for maintenance; alternative treks (Salkantay, Lares) stay open.

Is Lima nice in July?

Lima's winter (June–October) is grey and foggy but dry, around 15–18°C. The highlands are at their best in the same months.
