Best Time to Visit London: Late Spring and Early Autumn, and Why It Is Never Really Off-Season

London's weather is famously changeable in every month, so the calendar is really about daylight, prices and events. May, June and September come out ahead on all three.

Why this guide: about 4,400 people a month search Google for “best time to visit london” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.

The short answer

  • Best overallMay–June and September
  • CheapestJanuary–February and early November
  • AvoidThe two weeks before Christmas for hotel rates; late July–August if you want to avoid peak crowds and warm Tube carriages

Spring (March–May)

March is unreliable; April brings blossom in Regent's Park and Kew; May is the first genuinely lovely month with 17–19°C days and daylight until 9 p.m. The Chelsea Flower Show (late May) fills the Chelsea and Kensington hotels for a week. Late May's bank holiday is the start of the school half-term crowds.

Summer (June–August)

Daylight runs to nearly 10 p.m. at the June solstice; Wimbledon (late June–early July) and the Proms (mid-July–September) are the season's fixtures. Heatwaves above 30°C hit most summers and the deep Tube lines have no air conditioning — plan the Elizabeth line and buses. August is the busiest tourist month and the Notting Hill Carnival closes West London on the bank-holiday weekend.

Autumn (September–November)

September is the second sweet spot: 20°C days, the summer crowds gone, the theatre season opening. October is golden in the royal parks and rates start to fall; November is dark and damp but cheap — until the Christmas lights on Oxford Street and Regent Street switch on in mid-November and the December market stalls open.

Winter (December–February)

December is expensive and crowded with the markets, Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park and the West End at full tilt; the week between Christmas and New Year is the peak. From 2 January, London is at its cheapest: 5–8°C, occasional frost, the January sales, and museum galleries you can have almost to yourself. February stays cheap and adds the Chinese New Year parade.

Booking from the engine

Heathrow (LHR) is 60–75 minutes from central London by car, City Airport (LCY) 20 minutes to the City; the engine's London page is built around Heathrow. A chauffeur from LHR avoids the Piccadilly line with luggage; see our Tower of London guide for the City-vs-South Bank hotel choice.

Three things to get right

  • September: warm days, long evenings, no school holidays.
  • 2 January–February is the only cheap London.
  • Book Chelsea Flower Show and Wimbledon weeks months out.
