Why this guide: about 22,200 people a month search Google for “best time to visit hawaii” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Best overallApril–May and September–early November
- CheapestLate April–May and September–October; also the first two weeks of December
- AvoidChristmas–New Year and mid-June to mid-August if price matters; February for the highest rainfall on windward coasts
Two seasons, not four
Hawaii runs a summer (kau, May–October) with daytime highs around 29–31°C and a winter (hooilo, November–April) that is only a few degrees cooler but wetter, especially on the windward (north-east) sides of each island. Leeward resort coasts — Waikiki and Ko Olina on Oahu, Kaanapali and Wailea on Maui, the Kohala Coast on the Big Island — stay dry most of the year, which is why the resorts are there.
Winter: whales and big surf
Humpback whales arrive from Alaska in December and peak from January to March; Maui's Auau Channel is the best place to see them from a boat or the shore at McGregor Point. On Oahu's North Shore the winter swell brings 20–40-foot waves and the pro surfing contests at Pipeline and Sunset Beach — spectacular to watch, closed to swimming. Winter is also the peak price season, with the two weeks around Christmas the most expensive nights of the year.
Summer: calm water and family crowds
From May to September the North Shore goes flat and becomes a snorkelling beach, the trade winds keep the resort coasts pleasant, and the ocean is at its warmest (26–27°C). Mid-June to mid-August is the family high season with prices to match. Hurricane season is officially June–November, but landfalls are rare; late August–September carries the highest risk.
The shoulder months are the answer
Late April to early June and September to early November combine dry weather, calm seas, lighter crowds and the year's lowest resort rates outside the December lull. Maui's Kaanapali and Oahu's Waikiki both run 20–35% below Christmas pricing in these windows, and airfares from the mainland West Coast drop with them.
Booking notes
Fly into Honolulu (HNL) for Oahu or Kahului (OGG) for Maui; the engine's Honolulu page pairs hotels with the airport. Inter-island flights are 30–45 minutes. A chauffeur from HNL to Waikiki is 25 minutes; from OGG to Wailea about 35.
Three things to get right
- Whales plus dry weather: aim for March on Maui.
- September has the warmest water and the emptiest beaches.
- Book Christmas week a year out or skip it entirely.
