Why this guide: about 6,600 people a month search Google for “best places to travel in february” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- SunAruba, Punta Cana, Cancun, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Thailand, Vietnam, Oahu
- EventsRio Carnival, Venice Carnival, Chinese New Year, the Sapporo Snow Festival's tail, Mardi Gras
- WildcardsBaja California for grey whales, Maui for humpbacks, Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, Japan's plum blossom and snow monkeys
Carnival and festivals
Rio's Carnival (dates move with Easter — check) is the world's biggest party, with the Sambadrome parades and the street blocos; Salvador's is the more African, more musical alternative. Venice's Carnival fills the lagoon city with masks for two weeks; Nice and Cologne have theirs; New Orleans' Mardi Gras is the American version. Chinese New Year lights Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei — and empties Chinese cities of locals for a week.
The Caribbean and Mexico
February is the Caribbean's driest, calmest, most expensive stretch — Aruba, Barbados, St Lucia, Turks and Caicos, Punta Cana and Jamaica all at their best. Cancun and the Riviera Maya have 28°C days, no sargassum yet and the mid-month lull between Presidents' Day and spring break. Costa Rica's Pacific side stays dry; Panama's Bocas del Toro is in its short dry window.
Whales and wildlife
Baja California's San Ignacio and Magdalena lagoons for grey whales that come to the boats (January–March); Maui's Auau Channel for humpbacks at peak; Dominica and the Dominican Republic's Samaná Bay for humpbacks in the Caribbean; Kaikoura in New Zealand for sperm whales. Botswana's Okavango is green season — cheaper, birds and calves, afternoon storms; Tanzania's southern Serengeti has the wildebeest calving.
Asia and cheap Europe
Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos are dry and warm; Sri Lanka's beaches and the Cultural Triangle are at their best; Japan has plum blossom in Kyoto, the snow monkeys at Jigokudani, and Hokkaido's powder. In Europe, February is the last cheap month: Paris (outside Fashion Week), London, Rome, Lisbon and Seville (almond blossom, 18°C), Prague and Vienna's ball season. The Alps are in peak ski season and priced for the half-term break.
Booking it
Carnival hotels in Rio and Venice book six months out; the Caribbean's February is the highest rate of the year — book by November. Europe's cities can be booked late. The engine has destination pages for Aruba, Punta Cana, Cancun, Jamaica, Phuket, Tokyo, Paris, Rome and Lisbon; Vacation Packages bundle the flight, and the chauffeur booker covers the airport transfer at each end.
Three things to get right
- Check the Carnival dates — Easter moves them.
- Mid-February in Mexico is the lull between two US holidays.
- Europe stays cheap until the first week of March.
