Book six months ahead — it is Japan's most expensive fortnight — and have a plan B for a late season. Washington DC's Tidal Basin peaks late March to early April with the National Cherry Blossom Festival; Vancouver's start; Seoul's are in early April.
The tropics' last dry weeks
Cancun, the Riviera Maya, Punta Cana and Jamaica are dry and 28°C — but US spring break fills the party resorts for the first three weeks; adults-only properties and the second half of the month are the answer. Costa Rica's Pacific stays dry until late April. Thailand's north is hot and hazy from burning season; the islands are still good. Oahu and Maui are warm with the last whales.
Spring in the south of Europe and North Africa
Seville's orange blossom and Semana Santa (Easter week, dates move) with Andalusia at 22°C; Lisbon and the Algarve warming; Sicily and Malta ahead of the mainland. Morocco's ideal month — Marrakech at 24°C, the Atlas snow-capped, the Sahara warm by day; Egypt's temples at Luxor and Aswan at 28°C before the heat; Jordan's Petra and Wadi Rum in wildflower season.
Festivals and snow
Holi (dates move; Mathura and Jaipur are the classic places) colours India in March; St Patrick's Day fills Dublin on the 17th; SXSW takes Austin for ten days. The Alps, Whistler and Colorado have the best spring skiing — long days, soft snow, sunny lunches — at post-half-term prices. Patagonia's autumn colour and the last trekking weeks of the season in Torres del Paine.

Japan for blossom: book flights and hotels by September.
