Why this guide: about 22,200 people a month search Google for “wellness retreats” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Yoga and mindfulnessBali (Ubud), Costa Rica (Nosara, the Osa), Rishikesh, Thailand's Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, Portugal's Alentejo — $150–$500 a night
- Medical and longevitySHA (Spain, Mexico, the UAE), Lanserhof (Austria, Germany, Sylt, London), Clinique La Prairie (Switzerland), Chenot Palace (Switzerland, Azerbaijan), Kamalaya (Thailand), Six Senses — €600–€2,500 a night
- Ayurveda and spaAnanda in the Himalayas, Kerala's Somatheeram and Kalari Kovilakom, Chiva-Som (Hua Hin), Miraval and Canyon Ranch (Arizona), Palmaïa and Rancho La Puerta (Mexico), the Alpine thermal spas — $400–$1,500
The types
Yoga and meditation retreats — daily practice, vegetarian food, optional silence, from a shala in Ubud to a Portuguese farmhouse. Medical and longevity — a clinic-hotel with doctors, diagnostics (blood panels, genetics, body composition), a prescribed diet (often fasting-based), and treatments; a week minimum, results-driven. Ayurvedic — India's 5,000-year system: a doctor's dosha assessment, oil treatments, herbal medicine, a strict diet, two to three weeks for a panchakarma. Fitness and weight — boot camps, hiking, cycling, with nutrition. Digital detox and silent — phones surrendered, Vipassana's ten days of silence (free, donation-based), or a luxury version. Thermal and spa — the European tradition (Baden-Baden, Bad Ragaz, the Dolomites' hay baths, Iceland's lagoons) of water and rest with no programme at all.
Where and what it costs
Bali's Ubud is the yoga capital (Fivelements, COMO Shambhala, Bagus Jati; $150–$600). Costa Rica's Nosara and the Nicoya Peninsula (Blue Spirit, Bodhi Tree) and the Osa (Lapa Rios for jungle-and-wellness; $200–$800). Thailand: Kamalaya on Koh Samui (the benchmark holistic retreat, $500–$1,200), Chiva-Som at Hua Hin ($900–$2,000), Koh Phangan's yoga and fasting scene ($100–$300). India: Ananda in the Himalayas above Rishikesh ($700–$1,500), Kerala's Ayurvedic hospitals-as-resorts (Kalari Kovilakom, Somatheeram, Niraamaya; $200–$600 with treatments). Europe: Lanserhof Tegernsee and Lans ($800–$2,000), SHA Wellness on the Costa Blanca ($700–$1,500), Clinique La Prairie and Chenot Palace Weggis ($1,500–$3,000), Preidlhof in the Dolomites, Euphoria in Greece, the Alentejo's Sublime Comporta. North America: Miraval (Arizona, Austin, the Berkshires; $700–$1,200), Canyon Ranch (Tucson, Lenox; $800–$1,500), Rancho La Puerta in Baja ($600–$1,000 a night, week-long), Palmaïa on the Riviera Maya, Lake Austin Spa. The Maldives' Six Senses Laamu and JOALI Being for the island version ($1,500–$3,000).
Medical and longevity, specifically
The fastest-growing segment: SHA (Alicante, plus Riviera Nayarit in Mexico and Emirates Island in the UAE) for its 7-day programmes with diagnostics and a macrobiotic-based diet; Lanserhof for the Mayr cure (chewing, fasting, gut) and its new London outpost at the Arts Club; Clinique La Prairie in Montreux for the cell-therapy heritage and its longevity programme; Chenot Palace for the detox method; Kamalaya for the integrative medicine at lower cost; Six Senses' 'Grow a New Body' programmes with Dr. Alberto Villoldo; Canyon Ranch and Miraval for the American version. Expect a week, a medical intake, a restricted diet and a cost of €5,000–€20,000 per person — and results measured in blood markers, not in massages.
How to choose
Decide the goal — rest, a reset, a diagnosis, weight, a practice — and choose the type before the place. Check the programme is included in the rate or charged per treatment (Kamalaya and SHA are package-priced; many resorts charge à la carte and the spa bill doubles the room). Ask about the minimum stay (three nights for a reset; seven for medical; 14–21 for Ayurveda), the food (is it a restricted diet, and is there a choice), whether phones and alcohol are allowed, the practitioner-to-guest ratio, and whether it is adults-only. Read reviews for the programme, not the pool. Solo travellers are the majority at most retreats; couples' programmes exist at the resort end.
Booking it
The engine's hotels search has Ubud, Nosara, Koh Samui, Hua Hin, Rishikesh, Kerala, Tuscany, the Dolomites, Alicante, Tucson, the Riviera Nayarit and the Maldives; the Resort Collection carries the wellness-focused properties; Vacation Packages bundle the flight. Many retreats are two to three hours from the airport (Ananda, Kamalaya, Lanserhof Tegernsee, the Osa) and a pre-booked chauffeur is the transition from the world to the programme. Three things to get right
- Choose the type (yoga, medical, Ayurveda, silence) before the place.
- Package-priced retreats (Kamalaya, SHA, Miraval) avoid the à-la-carte spa bill.
- Medical retreats need a week and a restricted diet — go for the blood markers, not the massages.
