Why this guide: about 2,400 people a month search Google for “how early to get to the airport for international flight” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Default3 hours for a checked bag at a big hub in peak hours; 2 hours with PreCheck, a carry-on and online check-in at a normal hour
- Hard cut-offsBag drop closes 45–75 minutes before departure (airline-specific); gates close 15–20 minutes before
- Add time forJFK, LAX, Heathrow, CDG and Pearson at 6–9 a.m. or 3–7 p.m.; holidays; group or paper-ticket check-in; visa document checks at the counter
The cut-offs that actually matter
Every airline has an international bag-drop cut-off, usually 60 minutes (Air Canada 60, United 60, Delta 60, American 60, British Airways 60, Air France 60 at CDG; some are 75 at busy stations, Lufthansa 45 at some). Miss it and the bag does not fly, whether or not you make the gate. Online check-in closes 60–90 minutes before; the gate closes 15–20 minutes before departure. Work backwards from the bag-drop cut-off: arrive with at least 45 minutes to spare before it, so 2 hours is the practical floor with a bag.
Three hours, two hours, or ninety minutes
Three hours: a checked bag at JFK, LAX, Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle, Pearson, Miami or Newark in the morning or evening peak, during holidays, with children, or if your visa needs a document check at the counter (many Asian and African destinations). Two hours: a carry-on, online check-in, PreCheck or its equivalent, a mid-morning or mid-afternoon departure. Ninety minutes: only at a small airport with no bag, PreCheck and a lounge you know — and never on a non-refundable ticket.
Airport by airport
JFK: Terminals 1, 4 and 8 have long security lines at 4–8 p.m.; the AirTrain from parking adds 15 minutes. LAX: Tom Bradley's security peaks 10 p.m.–1 a.m. for the Asia departures; the horseshoe traffic can add 30 minutes to the last mile. Heathrow: security is efficient but the terminals are large — allow 20 minutes from security to a remote gate at T5. Charles de Gaulle: Terminal 2E's satellites are a train ride from the check-in hall; allow 30 minutes after security. Toronto Pearson: T1's US pre-clearance (for US-bound flights) needs its own time — arrive 3 hours for US departures with a bag; international departures from T1 and T3 are quicker. Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Singapore, Doha and Dubai are fast if you are airside.
What shortens the wait
TSA PreCheck (or Global Entry) at US airports; Nexus lanes at Pearson; fast-track passes sold at many airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, CDG); airline elite status and premium cabins (dedicated check-in and security lanes at most hubs); online check-in with a mobile boarding pass and a bag tag printed at the kiosk; CLEAR at US airports. Lounge access turns the extra hour into a shower and a meal rather than a wait, which makes arriving early cost nothing.
Timing the chauffeur
Set the pickup for the departure time minus the airport time (2–3 hours) minus the drive at that hour plus 20 minutes buffer — a 6 p.m. flight from JFK with a bag from Midtown means leaving at 2:15 p.m. The chauffeur booker on this page takes flight numbers and times the pickup for the traffic; for the return, the driver tracks the flight and waits at arrivals. The engine's flights page shows the departure terminal so you can check the airport's own security-wait estimate the morning of.
Three things to get right
- Work back from the bag-drop cut-off, not the departure time.
- Three hours at JFK, LAX, LHR, CDG and Pearson in peak hours; two with PreCheck and a carry-on.
- Pearson for US flights is 3 hours — pre-clearance is a second border.
