Best Time to Visit the Maldives: Dry Season, Manta Season and the Monsoon Discount

The Maldives is not one season: the dry north-east monsoon gives you glassy lagoons; the wet south-west monsoon gives you mantas, surf and a third off the villa. Decide which you are paying for.

Why this guide: about 6,600 people a month search Google for “best time to visit maldives” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.

The short answer

  • Best overallJanuary–April for weather; August–September for marine life at a lower price
  • CheapestMay–June and September–November (excluding Chinese holidays and the Eid weeks)
  • AvoidChristmas–New Year and Easter for the year's highest villa rates; June for the wettest weeks

Dry season (December–April)

The north-east monsoon brings clear skies, calm seas and 30°C days; visibility for snorkelling is at its best (30 metres plus) and the lagoons are mirror-flat. It is peak season: Christmas–New Year and Easter carry the highest villa rates in the Indian Ocean, and the best resorts require minimum stays and deposits months ahead. February–March is the driest, calmest stretch.

Wet season (May–November)

The south-west monsoon brings more cloud, short heavy showers and stronger winds, with June and September usually the wettest. It rarely rains all day; a typical monsoon day is a bright morning, a downpour, and a golden evening. Resort rates fall 30–50%, and many properties add free half-board or transfers to fill villas.

The marine calendar

Manta rays gather in Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay from June to November, peaking August–September — the best manta encounter on earth, and a wet-season event. Whale sharks are year-round in South Ari Atoll, most reliable August–November on the east side and December–April on the west. Surf season on the Male atolls runs April–October.

Choosing an atoll

The northern atolls (Baa, Noonu, Lhaviyani) are drier in the wet season than the far south (Addu, Gaafu). Resorts within 30 minutes of Male by speedboat spare you the seaplane, which does not fly after dark — late-arriving flights mean an overnight in Male before a seaplane transfer.

Booking from the engine

Velana International (MLE) is the gateway; the resort books the seaplane or speedboat. Use the hotels tab or the Resort Collection for whole-week stays, and add a flight search into MLE — Dubai, Doha and Singapore are the usual connections.

Three things to get right

  • Mantas at Hanifaru Bay (Aug–Sep) are worth a wet-season trip on their own.
  • February–March for the flattest lagoons and clearest water.
  • Book resorts within speedboat range if your flight lands after 3 p.m.
