Kyoto's koyo
Kyoto's maples peak in the second half of November — Tofuku-ji, Eikan-do's night illumination, Arashiyama, Kiyomizu-dera — the city's most photographed fortnight after cherry blossom, and nearly as expensive. Tokyo's ginkgo avenues (Meiji Jingu Gaien) and Rikugien's lights follow into early December; Nikko and Kamakura are options. Seoul's Namsan and the palaces turn at the same time. Book by July.
The tropics reopen
Thailand's monsoon ends in the Andaman (Phuket, Krabi) by mid-month and the Gulf islands (Koh Samui) by December — Loy Krathong's lanterns fall in November; Vietnam's south and centre dry out; Cambodia's Angkor in green and cool; Sri Lanka's west and south begin their season; Bali is wet. The Caribbean's storms end: Punta Cana, Jamaica, Aruba, St Lucia and the Bahamas at near-winter weather and pre-December prices; Cancun and the Riviera Maya likewise, with the sargassum gone.
The desert and the Gulf
Dubai and Abu Dhabi's season opens at 30°C with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (late November–early December); Oman; Egypt's Nile cruises and Red Sea at their best (Luxor 27°C); Jordan's Petra in cool sun; Morocco's south and the Sahara; Rajasthan's palaces at 28°C and Diwali if the lunar calendar puts it in early November.
The south, and the markets
Patagonia's trekking season opens — Torres del Paine and El Chaltén in spring wildflowers; Buenos Aires' jacarandas; Chile's wine valleys; New Zealand's South Island in lupins; Australia's Sydney warming; South Africa's Cape at its best with whales still at Hermanus. Oaxaca and Mexico City's Día de los Muertos on the 1st and 2nd. In Europe, the Christmas markets open around the 20th — Vienna, Strasbourg, Nuremberg, Cologne, Prague — and the first two weeks of the month are the cheapest of the year in every capital.
