Why this guide: about 8,100 people a month search Google for “best places to travel in july” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Cool and beautifulThe Alps and Dolomites, Norway, Iceland, the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, Scotland's Highlands
- Dry seasonKenya (the Mara river crossings), Bali, Peru, Bolivia's Uyuni, Sri Lanka's east coast
- CheapDubai and Abu Dhabi (half-price five-stars), the Caribbean's summer rates, Marrakech's riads, Cape Town's winter deals
Mountains and the north
The Dolomites' rifugio-to-rifugio hiking, the Swiss Alps' trains and lakes (Interlaken, Zermatt, the Bernina), Austria's Tyrol, Slovenia's Lake Bled and Triglav — all in peak season, but the mountains absorb it. Norway's fjords and Lofoten, Iceland's highlands, Scotland's Highlands and islands (midges included), Ireland's west coast. The Canadian Rockies at full turquoise; Alaska's salmon runs and bears at Katmai; Newfoundland's icebergs and whales.
Dry-season Asia and Africa
Kenya's Masai Mara for the migration's river crossings (mid-July to September), Tanzania's northern Serengeti, Uganda and Rwanda's gorillas in the drier weeks, Zambia's South Luangwa walking safaris. Bali and Lombok in peak dry season — busy but reliably sunny; Sri Lanka's east coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee) in its season; Borneo's orangutans and the Sipadan diving. Japan's Fuji climbing season opens (July–early September).
South of the equator
Peru's clearest month for Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley (and the busiest — book the Inca Trail a year ahead); Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni dry and mirror-less but starkly white; Chile's Atacama. Cape Town's winter is wet but the Winelands, whale-watching from Hermanus and the low hotel rates are the trade; Sydney and Melbourne at 17°C with the ski fields open; New Zealand's Queenstown for skiing. Rio is 25°C and dry.
The cheap hot places
Dubai and Abu Dhabi at 42°C, with five-star hotels at 40–60% off and the Dubai Summer Surprises promotions — the mall-and-pool holiday. Marrakech's riads at their cheapest (do the coast — Essaouira — for relief). The Caribbean's summer rates (30–40% off) with the hurricane-season caveat; Aruba is the safest bet, outside the belt. Cancun and the Riviera Maya are hot, humid and cheap with peak sargassum.
Booking it
Europe's mountains and coast book three to six months out for July; the safari camps a year ahead. The cheap options — Dubai, the Caribbean — can be booked weeks out on the engine's Ras Al Khaimah, Aruba and Cancun pages. Vacation Packages bundle the flight; the chauffeur booker covers Toronto, Vancouver, New York, London and Paris airports for the departure end.
Three things to get right
- Mountains over coast in Europe — cooler, and the crowds thin above 2,000 m.
- Kenya's river crossings are a July–September window; book a year ahead.
- Dubai in July is half price if you live in the pool.
