Why this guide: about 3,600 people a month search Google for “best places to travel in august” (US, DataForSEO Labs, September 2026). This is the answer we would give a client, written to be booked from.
The short answer
- Cool and uncrowdedScandinavia, the Baltics, Scotland, Ireland, the Alps above 2,000 m, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, the Canadian Rockies
- Dry seasonKenya, Tanzania, Bali, Peru, the Galápagos, Sri Lanka's east coast, Madagascar
- CheapParis and Rome in the August exodus, Dubai's summer deals, the Caribbean's late-summer rates, Marrakech
North and up
Stockholm's archipelago, Copenhagen, Norway's fjords in their warmest weeks, Finland's lakes and the Helsinki–Tallinn–Riga circuit; Scotland for the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe (all month — book early) and the Highlands; Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way. The Alps and Dolomites at peak but cool above the tree line; Slovenia and the Tatras as the cheaper mountains. Iceland's last full-access month before the highlands close.
The empty capitals
Paris in August is quiet, cheaper and partly closed — the museums are open, the Seine has its beaches, the neighbourhood bistros are shut for their congés; Rome is the same, with the Romans at the coast. Madrid and Milan likewise. If you want the icons without the crowds and can accept some closures, August is the counter-intuitive city month. London is busy but not closed.
The other hemisphere's dry season
Kenya's Mara and Tanzania's northern Serengeti for the migration's peak crossings; Zambia and Zimbabwe's walking safaris; Namibia's Etosha. Bali and Lombok in peak dry season (busy with Europeans); Sri Lanka's east coast; Malaysia's Perhentians. Peru and Bolivia's clearest skies; the Galápagos' cool-water season with the wildlife most active; Madagascar's lemurs and baobabs in the dry.
Canada and Japan
Atlantic Canada — Nova Scotia's Cabot Trail, PEI's beaches, Newfoundland's whales — is at its best and still uncrowded; the Rockies are in full summer; Toronto's Caribbean Carnival and the CNE, Vancouver's Pride and the fireworks. Japan is hot and humid but has its festival month: Aomori's Nebuta, Tokushima's Awa Odori, the Obon dances, Kyoto's Daimonji fires on the 16th; Hokkaido is the cool escape with Furano's lavender finishing.
Booking it
Scandinavia and Scotland book three to four months out; Edinburgh Fringe accommodation six. The empty capitals can be booked late at a discount — the engine's Paris and Rome pages show it. The Caribbean's August is cheap with a storm caveat; Aruba is outside the belt. Vacation Packages bundle the flight; the chauffeur booker covers the airport at either end.
Three things to get right
- Edinburgh Fringe: book by March.
- Paris in August is quiet and cheap; check your favourite bistro is open.
- Atlantic Canada is the underrated August.
