Montego Bay and Rose Hall
Fifteen to thirty minutes from Sangster International (MBJ): the shortest transfer and the most resorts. Half Moon (villas, the equestrian centre, the old-money benchmark) and Round Hill (Ralph Lauren-designed cottages; plans available) for luxury; Hyatt Zilara and Ziva Rose Hall, Secrets St James and Secrets Wild Orchid, Excellence Oyster Bay on its own peninsula east of the city, Iberostar's Rose Hall trio, Royalton Blue Waters and Hideaway, Sandals Royal Caribbean with its private island, Sandals Montego Bay by the runway. The beaches are calm but smaller than Negril's.
Negril
Ninety minutes west: Seven Mile Beach, the cliffs at the West End, Rick's Café's sunset dives, and the island's most relaxed scene. Sandals Negril and Couples Negril and Couples Swept Away (the fitness and tennis one) for couples on the beach; Beaches Negril for families; Azul Beach and Riu for value; the cliff-side boutiques (The Caves, Rockhouse, Tensing Pen) are the alternative to the buffet and are mostly not all-inclusive. The sunsets are the reason.
Ocho Rios and the South Coast
Ocho Rios (90 minutes east) for Dunn's River Falls, the Blue Hole, Mystic Mountain and the north coast's lushness: Moon Palace Jamaica, Beaches Ocho Rios, Sandals Ochi and Sandals Royal Plantation, Jamaica Inn (the classic, not AI), Couples Tower Isle and Couples Sans Souci; GoldenEye at Oracabessa (Ian Fleming's villa) for the most private luxury. The South Coast (two hours) is Sandals South Coast's two-mile private beach and over-water villas, and the Treasure Beach fishing villages — the least developed Jamaica.
Choosing and when
Short transfer and the widest choice: Montego Bay. The beach and the sunsets: Negril. Waterfalls and the green north: Ocho Rios. Seclusion and the over-water bungalows: the South Coast. Booking it
